LEAD POISONING CLAIMS
LEAD POISONING IN CHILDREN – JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI (2014-2016)
WHAT HAPPENED IN JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI?
Contamination of the water supply in Jackson, Mississippi has been a public health crisis since 2014. In 2015 and 2016, water samples taken in Jackson revealed that a large number of homes had dangerously high levels of lead in their drinking water. The lead levels in Jackson were shockingly comparable to the lead levels that contaminated the water supply in Flint, Michigan just one year earlier. Despite being aware of the looming problem, city officials in Jackson failed to notify and warn residents to refrain from using the water, and failed to take timely action to redress the public health crisis.
WE CAN HELP YOU RECOVER COMPENSATION FOR YOUR LEAD POISONING INJURIES
Children in Jackson were exposed to lead between 2014 and 2016 when the city changed its drinking water supply. Lead poisoning can have serious, lifelong consequences. Children under the age of six are most susceptible to the dangerous effects of lead consumption. As a neurotoxin, lead is correlated with a variety of developmental, cognitive, neurological, and digestive problems. If your child has suffered from lead poisoning, you can file a claim for compensation for medical costs, lost wages, pain and suffering, and in some cases, punitive damages.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What are the events that led to water contamination in Jackson, MS?
In 2013, testing on the water supply in Jackson, Mississippi found elevated levels of lead. These results led the Interim Director of Public Works, Willie Bell, to notify officials in Jackson of escalating lead levels. The city of Jackson was also advised about methods for preventing additional lead from contaminating the city’s drinking water. The city changed its source of drinking water from the Maddox Road Well system to surface water. The mayor at the time, Tony Yarber, authorized the switch to surface water. Surface water from the Pearl River and Ross Barnett Reservoir has an exceedingly low pH, a notable factor in increased concentrations of lead.
What happened after Jackson switched its water supply?
Mississippi Department of Health verified that the city water supply contained unacceptably high levels of lead. The agency reported lead levels exceeding the already dangerous level of 15 parts per billion in 22% of homes. By comparison, during the peak of the Flint lead water crisis, researchers found 16.7% of homes exceeded the federal “action” level for lead. Information regarding levels of lead contamination in the drinking water was not disclosed until January, 2016.
Who was potentially affected by elevated lead levels
The residents of Jackson were potentially exposed to contaminated water through consumption or contact. The city is composed of mostly black, working-class residents. Children and infants are the most at-risk for serious and long-term injuries from lead contamination.

What is lead?
Lead is a neurotoxin that can poison a child’s brain if it is ingested. The effects of lead poisoning are drastic and permanent, and more severe the younger the child. Children that have been lead poisoned suffer from acute learning disabilities; diminished IQ scores; and struggle to stay on grade level as they progress through school. Lead poisoned children are far less likely to graduate from high school, go to college, or get a post-graduate degree than those who aren’t. There is absolutely no cure for lead poisoning.
What are the effects of lead poisoning?
Consuming water with lead can cause significant damage even in low doses. There is no known safe level of lead and no treatment for lead poisoning. Even lead concentrations as low as 5 μg/dL are linked to determinantal cognitive effects in children. Lead accumulates in the brain, liver, kidney, bones, and teeth. Lead poisoning can cause developmental delays, learning issues, irritability, cognitive deficits, seizures, appetite loss, fatigue, abdominal discomfort, vomiting, constipation, and hearing loss in children. In newborns and infants in utero, lead poisoning can cause prematurity, low birth weight, and delayed growth. Children who have been exposed to high levels of lead experience significant difficulties in school, low testing scores, and behavioral problems. Studies have shown that children with excessive lead exposure are less likely to graduate from high school or go to college. These physical and cognitive defects may be permanent.
